The Bowery Gallery in Manhattan welcomes you to attend their 50th anniversary exhibition showcasing works of their exceptional artists. 50 years ago, the Bowery Gallery began as a collaboration among artists hoping to contradict commercialism within the fine art industry. Today the gallery continues their mission by representing a carefully curated selection of passionate artists.
Bowery Gallery distinguished itself as a unique haven for emerging artists creating mostly figurative art in a time when abstract art reigned. Despite the diminishing popularity of figurative/representational art during the 60s and 70s, the founding Bowery Gallery artists were drawn to its ability to portray a narrative story.
“It was a gallery of artists united by a shared entrepreneurial spirit and, more importantly, a passion for keeping representational painting alive,” said early member Anthony Santuoso.
Another early member Barbara Grossman stated, “One of the main achievements of the gallery is that we have survived and evolved with our principles intact. Figuration or representation is not necessarily the criterion—Bowery Gallery has placed its priority on the expression of a visual language through formal means.”
